5 Must Haves for Cloth Diapering Success

  • 1.  Cloth Diapers/Diaper Doublers - These basically speak for themselves. Although you could use old towels and cotton blankets as cloth diapers, cloth diapering will be easier and more convenient with ready-made cloth diapers. Fitted Diapers are convenient because they are fastened with snaps so you don't have to worry about a separate fastener. They are easier to travel with because you would need to carry less of these than you would prefolds due to thier absorbancy . Joven has a nice variety of fitted diapers ranging from practical hemp blends to cushy organic cotton and luxurious bamboo. Diaper doublers offer additional absorbency while minimizing bulk. Prefold Diapers are the most economical and Joven's Dyed Prefolds come in 5 cool colors for those who want something a little more stylish. As your baby gets bigger use 2 or 3 prefold diapers at one time or in combination with diaper doublers for maximum absorbency with less bulk. You'll need a Snappi or diaper pins with these.

  • 2.  Diaper Pail Liners/Wet Bags - Use a diaper pail liner to hold soiled diapers until laundry day. Use Wet Bags to hold wet items while traveling. Mini wet bags are great for holding moist washcloths for wiping. (Now that my children are out of diapers my wet bag holds wet bathing suits and my diaper pail liner holds dirty rags that were used for cleaning.)

  • 3.  Diaper Covers- Unless you have all in one diapers or are doing Elimination Communication and changing every time your baby wets, you will need diaper covers to prevent moisture from leaking onto clothes or bedding.  One of Joven's goals is to provide wool pants and soakers that are perfectly suited to cloth diapering.

  • 4.  Cloth Wipes - It only makes sense. Why go for environmentally sustainable cloth diapering and keep using disposable wipes? Simply wash them with your diapers. Make a gentle soap for your cloth wipes by mixing water, a teaspoon of mild liquid soap and 2 or 3 drops of tea tree oil in your desired container. Many people like to use a squirt bottle for their soap.

  • 5.  Other Accessories - If you use Prefold cloth diapers, don't forget to get a Snappi Diaper Fastener. If you use wool diaper covers, don't forget Joven's lanolin soap for washing. If you use Pocket Diapers, don't forget extra stuffins.
